Liesbet van Zoonen

I am currently professor of Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam, and have been professor of gender studies at the University of Maastricht; of media studies at the universities of Amsterdam, Oslo and Loughborough.

I have worked in universities all my life, and the thing I like best about them is that they allow you to engage with an incredible range of people, to work on different topics and to organise your own time. So I have moved from gender studies, to popular culture, to – currently – issues around identity management and big data. I have come to realise that my strength is in bringing people from different backgrounds and disciplines together to work on new ideas, and create a sense of community; in addition I seem to be able to explain very difficult things in a rather straightforward manner (so I have been told), and this works well with the many societal partners that I have worked with.
